The past helps to shape the present and the future.
Music, art, politics, society; all play a part in what is and what
will be. Such is the story of Small Dot Complex.
In 1997, a fledgling project entitled The
Sleeping Pill was undertaken. Never officially releasing
anything except a few demo cassettes for personal feedback, the
project name was later changed to In Search Of Sleep.
It lasted for 4 albums but never amounted to much. Trying to combine
elements of soundtrack music, shoegaze, darkwave, and industrial
produced spotty results at best. But for every mistake lessons can
be learned and thus, the project was more an experiment with textures
and technology to set the stage for what would become Small
Dot Complex.
In 2001 the technology became easier to use and understand
and thus Small Dot Complex was born. Time had not
diminished ideas and thus a new sound was created. Still drawing
on the same influences but this time, armed with a slightly better
sense of how to make music, the first two SDC releases
were again experiments. Soon after the second album, Meditation
For Cyborgs, things began to change within the SDC
engine and a “sound” would be established.
In 2007, Small Dot Complex released
what was then considered the best song written by the one-man-project.
Zeijaku, from the Sketches EP, broke all expectations
from the project. Taking all of the influences gathered over the
years and wrapping in the aural equivalent of a paper-thin wrapper,
Zeijaku presented a melancholy yet beautiful mood and atmosphere
and became a reference point to draw in new listeners. The song
gathered attention from a weekly paper in Santa Barbara, California.
Not to rest on the small bit of success, 2008 saw
the release of SDC’s “magnum opus”
titled Sound Construction. Combining themes of socialism,
capitalism, and American and European history, these themes were
juxtaposed to create music intended to make the listener ponder.
The end result was a ten-song cd that is considered by most people
to be the best thing released by SDC. As if that
wasn’t enough, Small Dot Complex also took
on the project of remixing the entire sixteen-song concept album
from Nine Inch Nails titled Year Zero
as well as a few songs from the Nine Inch Nails
album Ghosts. The five song remix ep is titled The
Five Ghosts Of The Apocalypse. The latest addition to the catalog
is the EP titled Drown.
